Düsseldorf. There’s no beating North Rhine-Westphalia when it comes to energy research - even in relation to other German federal states. At more than 30 renowned universities, 20 leading extra-university institutes and in the research departments of numerous companies people are working on the sustainable energy system of the future. However, the complexity of the challenges posed by the energy turnaround and climate protection requires combining the skills available. This is where the work of the Cluster EnergyResearch.NRW (CEF.NRW), backed by North Rhine-Westphalia’s economic affairs ministry, comes in.
The Cluster cross-links players in the energy research domain along the entire value chain. It aims at ensuring that progress in technological and socio-economic knowledge is applied faster than ever before. For this purpose the Cluster initiates research and development projects in a co-ordinated collaboration between research institutions on the one hand and industry and civil society on the other. In its inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary activities CEF.NRW considers the complex energy supply system as a whole.
Besides the purely technological transformation, the energy turnaround presents a new kind of challenge when it comes to shaping the process of community participation. The task is to provide ongoing scientific support and to develop specific problem-solving strategies. Here is where the Cluster makes an active contribution with its work. In addition the Cluster acts as a link with the energy-related activities on the part of the European Union and the German federal government as well as with relevant social initiatives.
EnergyAgency.NRW is in charge of managing the Cluster.
