The EnergyAgency.NRW has been working on behalf of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia since 1990 as an operative platform with a wide range of competencies in the energy domain: from energy research, technical development, demonstration and market launch through to initial energy consulting and occupational further training. Energy efficiency and climate protection are the central concerns for many of our activities. In times of valuable resources, climate protection and high energy prices it is more important than ever to forge ahead with the development of innovative energy technologies in NRW and to give an impartial assessment of how companies, municipalities and private individuals can handle energy more efficiently or make meaningful use of renewables. Acting for NRW’s economic affairs ministry the EnergyAgency.NRW provides consultancy services in the form of initial consultations, it manages powerful networks and energy forums, it offers state-wide market initiatives in various segments, a broad range of information and opportunities for further training – the whole portfolio organised in a total of 15 individual contracts.
The EnergyAgency.NRW has a workforce of around 140, operating primarily in Duesseldorf, Gelsenkirchen and Wuppertal. It is funded among other things by money from the European Union ERDF (European Regional Development Fund).
The themes covered by the EnergyAgency.NRW are geared to the many different tasks which have to be tackled in the context of a holistic energy transition: These range from system transformation of the energy infrastructure, mobility and vehicle fuel strategies, renewable energies in the system, business and financing models or energy-efficient construction and refurbishment, plus the topics of fuel cells and hydrogen, electromobility, through to biomass, geothermal energy, photovoltaics, hydropower and wind energy. The EnergyAgency.NRW also organises the Networks “Grids and Storage Systems, “Energy Economy - Smart Energy”, "CHP, Local and District Heating, Power Plants” or “Mining Economy”. The Network operations focus on highly competitive cooperative projects to initiate innovative projects and products, to speed up their market readiness and to exhaust all economic potentials. The Networks operate under the umbrella of the Cluster EnergyRegion.NRW. The EnergyAgency.NRW is also home to the Cluster EnergyResearch.NRW (CEF.NRW).
CEF.NRW acts as the contact body in all questions of energy research in NRW and aims at ensuring that new technological and socio-economic knowledge is put into practice more speedily than hitherto. To achieve this the Cluster initiates research and development projects in a coordinated collaboration between research institutions and industry.
The EnergyAgency.NRW also devotes its efforts to international emissions trading and, acting for the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, it supports the internationalisation of, in particular, small and medium-sized enterprises in NRW in the energy field. After all, renewable and efficient energy technologies from the energy region of North Rhine-Westphalia have excellent opportunities on world markets.
Initial energy consulting for industry, administrative bodies and regions in NRW is another major aspect of the EnergyAgency.NRW’s work. The engineers of the EnergyAgency.NRW provide initial consultations to give information on energy weak spots - from technical systems in buildings through to production sequences in companies- and about the increasing use of renewable energies. This ranges from the heating system and heat recovery through to insulation to provide protection from heat and cold in large production shops, from leak detection to the formulation of energy concepts or from photovoltaic house systems to heating pumps. Our experts also provide information on consulting and funding possibilities. In this way they help companies cut energy costs and they promote the enhancement of competitiveness.
The EnergyAgency.NRW maintains a series of further training courses - including courses for end consumers. These can be used by further training institutions, schools, child day care centres, energy utilities, federations, associations, universities, municipalities and companies in NRW. They are also available on the internet, for example in web communities. Furthermore there are behaviour modification projects for companies and administrative bodies related to the handling of energy, for example "mission E".
A large number of actions and projects deal with individual segments of the energy transition market: For instance the blog “Renewable Energies”, is an information and advice platform for renewable energies in NRW - providing an active communication and advisory service for members of the public, municipalities and investors. It is organised by the EnergyAgency.NRW. The EnergyAgency.NRW also coordinates state-wide market initiatives and community actions. The action “AltBauNeu” (“OldBuildingsNew”), the projects “50 Solar Housing Estates in NRW“, “100 Climate Protection Housing Estates in NRW”, the “Wood Pellets Action” or the Heat Pumps Market Place NRW” and “CHP.NRW – Power Meets Heat” plus the market initiative Photovoltaics NRW give information in NRW on environmentally friendly innovative heat and electricity supply and tips on how to save energy.
