Towards a Low Carbon, Green Energy Future

COP 23 in Bonn, presided over by the Republic of Fiji and organized by UNFCCC in November 2017, will focus on turning the words and commitments of the Paris Agreement into measurable actions by all countries.

Implementing climate action measures and energy transition policies in the post-Paris Agreement world requires a systemic approach that connects the power sector (e.g., via electrification) with prominent end-use sectors such as transport and housing in innovative and integrated ways (e.g., via ICT) in cities, countries, and regions around the world.

Following the success of GREF 2016, which focused on the power sector, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Bonn Office (Germany) in cooperation with UNFCCC, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy of the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia, continues with GREF 2017 titled "Towards a Low Carbon, Green Energy Future”.

The COP 23 Special Event - Global Renewable Energy Forum (GREF) 2017 provides added value to the COP 23 policy discussions by:

  1. Engaging and informing an international audience on state-of-the-art, energy transition applications and policies in two key sectors: Transport (e.g., strategy roadmaps, electric vehicles, batteries, ‘mobility as a service’, and diesel phase out policies); and Innovative, Integrated Systems (e.g., smart cities, heating and cooling);

  2. Highlighting the link between land, renewable energy, and climate change; and by

  3. Showcasing innovative ways for enabling energy access in the Global South.

Both transport and integrated systems constitute the new frontier in translating and implementing the Paris Agreement into practical policies and pointing the global community towards a low carbon, green energy future beyond COP 23.
